I've been using this same database setup since last Fall. Some issues may have arisen in it as I have run several versions of the software with it, including development versions. Somewhat like working without a net. Here's a short edit.
It just occurred to me that many of you are first time Firefox users due to discovering it in our class, so I thought it would be nice of me to include a little tip on making things run smoother. In your address bar type "about:config" (without the quotations of course). A bunch of strings will be displayed, but don't be alarmed only a few need to be changed.
# Set network.http.pipelining to true allowing for the use of HTTP/1.1 pipelining.
# Set network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to 16 so that Firefox can make more simultaneous connections for faster downloading
# Set network.http.proxy.pipelining to true (same as network.http.pipelining with proxies.
# Set network.prefetch-next to false. I think this cuts down memory usage because when set to true Firefox prefetchs "hinted" documents and store in the cache (e.g. the 1st Google Search result)
# Create and set nglayout.initialpaint.delay (integer) to 0 so that Firefox starts to render a page immediately (defaults to 250ms).
Other useful commands can be found here, but those are the main speed issue ones. Have fun!
Have you ever updated a program like AIM or Windows Media Player, and wished you hadn't? Have you ever discovered that an older program worked far better than the newer version, or the menus are all new and rearranged and you just want to go back to the old way things were? Well just like hardware drivers, the newest version isn't always the best, and the people at oldversion.com were smart enough to realize this and provide a site that hosts many of the old applications that most computer users utilize. Personally I use the older version of Nero Burning Rom, as well as AIM 5.9 (with middle_man), and an older version of Winamp. Enjoy!
So now I have a Facebook account and a gmail account. I have a blog for IS449 and have started another one for my MGMT490 group. It seems I have more responsibilites to "stay connected". Lately I've been feeling like I was serving the technology, rather than having it work for me.
So I took about a five-day moratorium on technology. I checked nothing (except my primary email account - hey, I'm not a caveman) from Monday through Friday, and it was great. Of course, I'm behind in all my classes now.
I think it's important to remember that sometimes it's good to spend some time "out of the loop" and that knowledge is just a tool - it is only valuable if we can use it to somehow enrich our lives.
For those of you who have no idea what BitTorrent is, it's a file format that's used to send data. Anything goes, music, movies, applications, most of it is illegal to be trading hands (like the music, some which even predates official release dates). I wouldn't like to say that I'm promoting software pirating or illegal music downloading, however, I would like to educate on the idea. What you do is search for these "Torrents" on sites like isoHunt, or PirateBay, then download the torrent and open it up with a torrent browser (I highly recommend uTorrent. The browser than connects you to seeders (those currently uploading a completed file) and leechers (those currently downloading and uploading the file). The idea behind this is that the leechers when finished become seeders and there is a continuous flow of data making the future download speeds incredibly fast. For example, on a private torrent site I'm a member of that has a limited amount of users who are required to keep a Upload/Download ratio of over 1.0, I am able to download a complete music album in less than five minutes at speeds generally over 500 KB/S. Torrents are a give-take relationship on the internet, doing this ensures quality for everyone. If you need any help feel free to ask!
The problem concerning the current web 2.0 and future 3.0, 4.0, ... x.0, in my opinion is bandwidth and the ability to send and receive these growing amounts of data needed to process web applications. I have read a few articles on super-pipes and newly developing technologies that theoretically can send data at terabyte speeds (while this is highly unlikely anytime soon). One article is listed here and I recommend it for a good read.
As Justin posted recently about Google and it's many of services, one of my favorites is the mobile GMail app. Now that many if not all of you have a GMail account, those that choose to use it (and benefit from EMail forwarding as I explained in an earlier post) can access their EMail from their mobile phone. Simply point your mobile browser to http://gmail.com/app and it will come up with a download link. It does use a decent amount of data transfer, so if you don't have a data plan with your cellular provider I'd watch out how many times you check your email. However, I used it heavily with an unlimited data transfer plan and I can say that it was one of the coolest things being able to check my EMail from Grand Haven Beach on my cell phone. If anyone tries it out or needs any help feel free to email me @ rsantapv@gmail.com
I wish I could say that adwords is easy but it is truly an art that I will hopefully someday master. As the rest of you have already expressed it is a new experience and will take some time getting used to. I just got done creating a new adgroup for the Chelsea Center for the Arts. I had an easy time getting my CPC down with my keywords but they don't direct a lot of traffic at all. I'm trying to get people to come to the site to enroll their children in pre-school programs that they have for young kids in art and music. I guess more research is in front of me!
I'm learning something new everyday in this IS 247 class. Recently, I have been browsing Google pages. I never knew Google had all of these different options for people to do. I use to think Google was nothing but a search engine, and now I know is so much more. Using Google Reader is wonderful. I basically don't have to go to all the different sites I usually go to in a day. Google reader allows me to see everything I need in one page.
Well I have managed to create some adwords for Chelsea Center for the Development of the Arts. I am not sure if what I did was correct. I created a new campaign because we wanting another landing page on how to get involved in the community. I couldn't decide between two different ads so I created two ad groups within my campaign. Did anyone else do this or did anyone use the ad variation option?
I'm not sure on Open Id yet? I like the concept of having one sign in for all the different accounts a person has to register for. I can't even count the number of accounts I have to sign into everyday, and sometimes it's hard to remember what my screen names are. My problem with open id is, I find the site confusing. I don't get how your supposed to register I site that you use regularly Open Id. If someone could help me with that, I would appreciate it.
As of now I major in Accounting, but as of lately I've been thinking about switching my major to Accounting Information Systems. I thought this major might fit me best because I like doing accounting work, and I also like to work with computers and new technology. I figured being in IS 247 would be a good start to see if this is something I really want to do. IS 247 is a requirement for a major in Accounting Information Systems according to AIS Graduation Checklist.
If you've found yourself scratching your head when the abbreviation RSS comes up, you are not alone. The following information may prove lucrative:
RSS - Rich Site Summary (dictionary.com)
RSS - Really Simple Syndication (Wikipedia)
RSS is bascially a format for delivering regularly changing web content. It is used to publish content such as news headlines, blog entires, revision history of a book, yada yada yada. The document itself is called a "feed," "web feed," or "channel." Once information about each item is in RSS format, an RSS-detection program can check the feed for changes and react to the changes in an appropriate manner.
A feed reader or news aggregator software is required to read the RSS format. Some of the more common web-based readers include Google Reader, My Yahoo, and Bloglines.
It comes in handy for those who have the constant need of browsing and staying informed, yet dislike visiting multiple websites for the latest information. It saves time and ensures privacy by eliminating the need to join each site's email newsletter. There are a number of sites that offer RSS including CNN, BBC, and our favorite site LearningRemix, etc.
As a matter of fact, the navigation menu bar on Windows Internet Explorer 7 has a RSS button (a dot with three arcs around it - next to the HOME button) which turns orange (the RSS icon color) as soon as the browser detects feeds at the website you visit. You can click the RSS button and browse the content of that particular website as headlines.
Its been a long time coming and the excitement and anxiety have now started to build up. I am almost DONE! Almost there. Just three more months. Hang in there. You'll WALK soon enough.
But there are some (and you know who you are) who are weary of the graduation talk, leery of the importance of the walk, yet cheery about finally being done. I am not sure about your reasons for not walking on graduation day; after all it is personal in nature - but I like to think that cynicism may have taken its toll on you OR you simply are too cool to walk. If you self-evaluate yourself in one of these categories, I've got a story to tell you.
Its a story of a father who was just TOO COOL and TOO CYNICAL to walk at his graduation. "What am I gonna do, walk up there and be handed a blank piece of paper," he thought, "And then what, pose for a few pictures infront of people who pretend they're excited for me, stand for hours for no reason, and then start on with a very difficult life ahead of me? No thank you!" he continued thinking. Years later when his son graduated with distinction, he had the desire to create a collage - one that would embody his graduation picture next to his father's. To keep the integrity of the surprise he searched and searched through the family albums but could find none. He finally asked his mother for some help but the mother, saddened, replied, "Sorry honey, your father never walked ... he has no pictures." The son, crushed, went to his father and asked, "Dad, why didnt you walk." The father had no answer.
You see this story is fiction. However, it is something that can happen.
So, take a walk, enjoy the spirit of the day, pretend that the people with you really are excited for you (truth is they really are), and make a few memories to cherish for years to come. You won't regret it.
Get GRADUATION information.
Deadline for submitting the application is January 24, 2008.
In my IS 320 class we are supposed to be downloading the SFTP that Eastern uses in order to upload files to our EMU people page. I am having trouble trying to install the program. Does anyone have any ideas on why it may not be opening when I try to install it?
I don't know how many of you use your phone to access the internet. I have a Treo 700 that I take with me everywhere and I use it alot to access this and many other websites that I need while I am not at home. The problem is that some of the web pages are so big that I really can't see too much of the page without having to scroll left and right along with up and down. Since we have been encouraged to use google in 247, I have been doing alot more searching on the things that they have to offer. One of the most recent that I have found is a web page that actually allows you to views other web pages from your mobile browser. Since I have found it so useful I though that I would pass it along.
Yesterday in class we had a very interesting discussion about what Web 2.0 is and about its future Web 3.0. On a german website I found a very interesting article about the Web 2.0 Expo in Berlin, which was hosted by Tim O'Reilly, one of the major founders of the Web 2.0.
In this article for all of you, who can't understand german, Tim O'Reilly describes, what exactly Web 2.0 is. Web 2.0 describes the change away from the computer as a central application platform towards the web. Another important fact about Web 2.0 is, that Web 2.0 pages getting better as more people using them.
At the end of the article Tim O'Reilly talks about the future of Web 2.0. In his opinion Web 3.0 is characterized by the physical connection between users and computers. This new trend is already visible by regarding the Touch screen, the I-Phone or WII consoles, where users already interact by using ther motions. Also voice recognition gives us the opportunity not only to interact by using the keyboard.
I'm really excited about what the future will offers us regarding web.
Well, Class has been going on for nearly two weeks now, and I have finally been able to start blogging! For some reason, I get get logged onto my computer at home, but my laptop seems to be doing so just fine. Hopefully I will be able to get much more done this weekend, as I have class all night tonight. Just thought I would give you all a helpful hint: Having had Bud as a professor last year, and going through all of the blogging once before, believe me when i say "Stay on top of it." I can get away from you, and it is easy points. Also, as a final note to this first blog, I thought I would touch on Devans post about the DTV transition. It seems that everyone is freaking out about, but I don't see why. If you have cable, it won't affect you at all. If not, you just need digital rabbit ears. At least, that's what I have been led to believe. If I am wrong, please feel free to start up a long, blog-consuming debate with me. Have a good day!
I just finished creating my first individual adgroup and ad for my groups organization The Phoenix Ensemble. Overall it wasn't a very hard assignment. The biggest problem come when you have to pick your keywords for the add. I find it hard sometimes to get the keywords specific enough to bring down the CPC without using too many keywords.
Do you know that the english version Wikipedia, as of January 2008, exceeds 2,172,800 articles revised by over 193,207,500 edits?
Do you know that the domain name http://www.wikipedia.org is rated as the 10th busiest on the internet?
Did you also know that the combined Wikipedias in all languages together contain 1.74 billion words in 7.5 million articles in approximately 250 languages?
How about this, the English wikipedia gains 1,700 articles per day at a steady pace - Did you know that?
The information posted above can easily be found on Wikipedia by searching for Wikipedia. However, what you may not find there is that, according to an article in BBC, Wikipedia has only 5 employees to manage the enitire corporation. Does that statistic blow you away? It caught me by surprise.
Here are a couple of other interesting facts about the company (some tech related some not):
- According to Tim O' Reilly Web 2.0 was the most cited Wikipedia entry of the year (2006)
- The Wikipedia operations are run on a software package called MediaWiki, written in PHP
- Wikipedia runs on LINUX servers (Derek would smile if he sees this)
- The DB server uses MySQL
- YOU CAN EDIT THE WIKIPEDIA COMPANY INFORMATION IN WIKIPEDIA (Talk about being open).
Aside from everything, Wikipedia is a revolutionary idea. I am an extensive user of the website, usually to gain knowledge about, well, just about anything.
The best thing, as Dr. Gibson mentioned, is that Wikipedia involves its users reducing cost and saving time - What a great concept (Why didnt I think of it?).
Happy Wikki-ing!
Just my two cents:
I was on the phone just the other day trying to place an order for a household item. Everything was fine until the salesperson requested a credit card number. All of sudden I felt a jolt - do I want to give my credit card number to this person that may never have any accountability.
I hung up the call and sat down to think. We sometimes take for granted the laws protecting us in the United States. Someone who may take our financial information over the phone (as long as we are not gullible enough to give it to any dick and harry) can, most likely, be held accountable by law enforcement agencies or in the court of law if we experience any compromise with our information. Citizens of our country are familiar with these laws. The consumers and retailers are cautious alike. But this last phone call made me think as to the kind of moral fiber and business ethic someone is an overseas country may possess, especially when it comes to developing nations.
I used to work for a Financial corporation not too long ago dealing with thousands of credit card numbers. I couldnt even perceive stealing that information and getting away with it - I am aware how strict the laws are and how forensics experts along with law enforement agencies could easily put me behind bars. But, in a country that is on the road to progress and has yet to solidify consumer protection laws, can this country provide me with the safety blanket I need to place an order - online or over the phone?
eCommerce has, without a fraction of a doubt, made life easier - But with most of the sales and support jobs being sent off-shore, I am compelled to re-evaluate my level of trust.
Can you help put my mind at ease?
Keep shopping safely!
Today's IS696 class aroused my interest in getting more information about web 3.0. I researched a little bit and found two interesting pages. One is wikipedia and the other one is from zdnet.
Especially the zdnet blog entry seems to be very interesting in my eyes. It describes what web 3.0 is going to be about and about the main layers of it.
According to Phil Wainewright (the author of the zdnet article) web 3.0 is going to deliver a new generation of business applications. This new generation consists of (among others) the so called semantic web that is an evolving extension of the World Wide Web in which web can be used in a format that can be read and used by software agents, thus permitting them to find, share and integrate information more easily.
Phil Wainewright also mentions the main three layers of web 3.0 that are API services (like Google search or AdWords APIs), Aggregation services (intermediaries that eliminate some issues help to aggregate raw API services) and finally Application services (composite applications that bring together functionality from multiple services to help users achieve their objectives in a flexible, intuitive and self-evident way).
I found Pure Visibility interesting when Bud mentioned them in class the other day so I decided to watch some of the podcasts Bud posted on Michigan Innovators. It is good to see a company in Michigan growing with the state of the economy here. Linda Girard, co-founded Pure Visibility in 2005 and it has grown from 3 employees to 15 and they anticipate growing to 25 people within the next year! Pure Visibility specializes in SEO and other tactics to help attract customers through the web.
Coincidentally, my wife maintains a few websites and one of her clients wants her to meet with Pure Visibility to see what they can do for them...
awesome... now I have a shared item. I am really excited...
Hey frendz, this is my first experiance with Google reader. I find it good.
this is the link to my shared item about the cytometers
Different companies come up when talking about Technology. Everybody knows Microsoft, Apple, Oracle, Sun Microsystems...
Those companies are considered as an important reference when trying to have an idea about "Technology", how it is "doing" or where it is going.
A "theory" in finance, called Markets Efficiency, states ,as one of it's important points, that all available (we can add "relevant") information on given stock (which represents the company) is reflected in it's price. So, keeping up with how "Technology" companies are doing in the Financial Markets should be one of the tools used to "examine" the industry's health.
Hello,
this is my first try to tag a blog entry using Google Reader. I liked the blog entry of diwakar. By clicking, you'll come to my public google reader page. Blogging is an important part of web 2.0 and i am enjoying taking part!
This is my first trial to make a shared tag through Google-Reader. I just picked one of Diwakars posts, maybe you find it interesting maybe not :).
this is my first blog using shared tag by google reader
Many of us have heard of the transitioning from our long last Analog Television to Digital Television. I think that this will be a good transition in terms of picture quality almost renewing the whole television experience. Seeing that the analog system has lived for almost 3 centuries we have been accustomed to shopping for these lower-end technology appliances. There are many considerations to factor in to your purchasing of HDTV's such as do you want Plasma, LCD, LCoS, or DLP. Unlike the analog version of TV's the only main concern was what size screen you wanted. However, the options do not stop at the picture you have other choices like: Do you want a Direct View TV, Rear Projection TV, or a Front Projection TV is better, or stay with the nostalgic CRT TV, Flat Panel, Wide Screen. Perhaps you prefer SDTV over HDTV or even EDTV over both. Their are a long line of options so be sure to do your homework before shopping. For a little insight on what a lot of abbreviations and jargon mean consult Shopping Guide or Consumer Reports for more information.
My group Chelsea Center for the Arts has come across a few obstacles along the way to creating our adwords campaigns but I think we finally have a few things figured out. We felt that since our organization has many different areas in which to sell the consumer something we would spread out and focus on multiple campaigns. Just wondering if any other groups are planning multiple campaigns to focus on different aspects of the organization and if so what kinds of approaches are you taking?
Google reader is a new experience to me and I am finding it very informative in that it brings subjects that others find important or relative to your attention. I think Google did a good job in developing this technology in that you have complete control on what you want public and private essentially tailoring news and point of views you find relevant for sharing or personal entertainment. You can view some of my interests in sports by clicking, Devon's Sports Interest.
I recently heard of a restaurant called Chipotle who specializes in Mexican food. My original thought was that Chipotle was a formal type of restaurant. However, upon my experience there I found that it was casual and more of a fast food type of environment. I quickly began to realize the neatness and nutritional facts posted inside the establishment indicating their products are organic so forth. My next thought was that if this place is not too popular now it soon will be and that perhaps I should look into their stock because I knew it was a matter of time before this company soared. Much to my knowledge I came across an article on MSN and learned that Chipotle now accounts for about $2 billion of the fast food market. Also it seems as though I should have bought stock with Chipotle as they have now generated a stock market value of $4 billion. If you are interested in investing here is their stock information, Chipotle Stock and store website, Chipotle.
Rich Sheridan, CEO of Menlo Innovations played a critical role in developing Accuri's core product Cytometer.A cytometer is basically a cell counter, and that equipment plays a pivotal role in some parts of medical research. Software is a key component of Accuri's product and should allow them to deliver fine quality where cost plays a major role. Accuri Cytometers aims to offer a 75% initial cost of savings against a typical market price for cytometers of $200k. Menlo's developed the software interface for the cytometer that delivers on the proposed value proposition using agile methodologies
Google is my favourite website. It is the first search engine that has ever been known. When I was in India all my assignments in school were done using books in the library as I had no idea what is Google all about. Nowadays we can't do anything with out Google. It really vast and will never stop helping us.
Google also provides free toolbars for the explorer with every page we surf. Google also offers various projects; Google Grants is one of the examples. It provides free advertising to selected nonprofit organizations. Google has donated about $33 million in advertising to more than 850 nonprofit organizations in 10 countries.
Google also supports entities with strong social missions who use market-based solutions for sustainable economic growth and development, Google's donation $2 million in conducting a program called ONE LAPTOP PER CHILD is one of the best examples.
If I keep saying, you won't be able to stop me. Rest part (updates on Google) will be continued in the coming days. KEEP SEARCHING--------
while surfing on net about agile modelling i found this site which gives info such as when and what to do in the initial agile requirements modelling, what modelling tools to be used etc.
It's really a good interview. It was mainly about the work done by Accuri Cytometers and Menlo Innovations. Menlo's intention was to develop software for the cytometer that delivers on the proposed value proportion. Accuri Cytometer is intended to lower the level of experience required for operation.
In the operations done, Menlo discovered that Cytometers play a vital role in the labs where they are used and that errors in utilizing them come with high cost, delaying the research projects for many months.
The activity of Accuri lies in getting potential buyers to their equipment enough to leave it in the hands of assistants. The market broadens and alters in a way that traditional makers of equipment are at disadvantage.
Web 2.0 has become a popular term these days. Web 2.0 is an enhancement of the existing internet. To break it down into a single definition that is relatively simple, Web 2.0 is a system in which online users become participants rather than mere viewers With Web 2.0, information can be pulled from a number of different places, and it can be personalized to meet the needs of a single user Web 2.0 will allow the mass population to communicate with each other and spread ideas rather than receiving their information from a single authority example of this is the ability to read newspapers from various countries other than the one you reside in
But i came across an article where some of the key problems with Web 2.0 is dependence. lets take a good example of what happens when you become heavily dependent on the Internet. If your connection go down, how will you access the information that you come to depend on? Because many web services will be offered for free, they won't be secure, and they could easily be targeted by hackers where now a days security is major concern
Rich sheridan, is the CEO of menlo innovations organisation. He developed a product known as cytometers with the product Accuri. The device which counts the cells with medical facilities.Accuri has come up with the idea of providing cytometers at price lower than in the market and reduce the expertise required for its operation and they approached menlo.
Accuri developed the products by using Cytometer protocols.Menlo has been working with Accuri for two years, and they expect that initial product shipments will not occur for another 6 to 12 months.
