]]>So I took about a five-day moratorium on technology. I checked nothing (except my primary email account - hey, I'm not a caveman) from Monday through Friday, and it was great. Of course, I'm behind in all my classes now.
I think it's important to remember that sometimes it's good to spend some time "out of the loop" and that knowledge is just a tool - it is only valuable if we can use it to somehow enrich our lives.

RSS is bascially a format for delivering regularly changing web content. It is used to publish content such as news headlines, blog entires, revision history of a book, yada yada yada. The document itself is called a "feed," "web feed," or "channel." Once information about each item is in RSS format, an RSS-detection program can check the feed for changes and react to the changes in an appropriate manner.
A feed reader or news aggregator software is required to read the RSS format. Some of the more common web-based readers include Google Reader, My Yahoo, and Bloglines.
It comes in handy for those who have the constant need of browsing and staying informed, yet dislike visiting multiple websites for the latest information. It saves time and ensures privacy by eliminating the need to join each site's email newsletter. There are a number of sites that offer RSS including CNN, BBC, and our favorite site LearningRemix, etc.
As a matter of fact, the navigation menu bar on Windows Internet Explorer 7 has a RSS button (a dot with three arcs around it - next to the HOME button) which turns orange (the RSS icon color) as soon as the browser detects feeds at the website you visit. You can click the RSS button and browse the content of that particular website as headlines.

I am not sure about your reasons for not walking on graduation day; after all it is personal in nature - but I like to think that cynicism may have taken its toll on you OR you simply are too cool to walk. If you self-evaluate yourself in one of these categories, I've got a story to tell you.
Its a story of a father who was just TOO COOL and TOO CYNICAL to walk at his graduation. "What am I gonna do, walk up there and be handed a blank piece of paper," he thought, "And then what, pose for a few pictures infront of people who pretend they're excited for me, stand for hours for no reason, and then start on with a very difficult life ahead of me? No thank you!" he continued thinking. Years later when his son graduated with distinction, he had the desire to create a collage - one that would embody his graduation picture next to his father's. To keep the integrity of the surprise he searched and searched through the family albums but could find none. He finally asked his mother for some help but the mother, saddened, replied, "Sorry honey, your father never walked ... he has no pictures." The son, crushed, went to his father and asked, "Dad, why didnt you walk." The father had no answer.
You see this story is fiction. However, it is something that can happen.
So, take a walk, enjoy the spirit of the day, pretend that the people with you really are excited for you (truth is they really are), and make a few memories to cherish for years to come. You won't regret it.

]]>In this article for all of you, who can't understand german, Tim O'Reilly describes, what exactly Web 2.0 is. Web 2.0 describes the change away from the computer as a central application platform towards the web. Another important fact about Web 2.0 is, that Web 2.0 pages getting better as more people using them.
At the end of the article Tim O'Reilly talks about the future of Web 2.0. In his opinion Web 3.0 is characterized by the physical connection between users and computers. This new trend is already visible by regarding the Touch screen, the I-Phone or WII consoles, where users already interact by using ther motions. Also voice recognition gives us the opportunity not only to interact by using the keyboard.
I'm really excited about what the future will offers us regarding web.

How about this, the English wikipedia gains 1,700 articles per day at a steady pace - Did you know that?
The information posted above can easily be found on Wikipedia by searching for Wikipedia. However, what you may not find there is that, according to an article in BBC, Wikipedia has only 5 employees to manage the enitire corporation. Does that statistic blow you away? It caught me by surprise.
Here are a couple of other interesting facts about the company (some tech related some not):
- According to Tim O' Reilly Web 2.0 was the most cited Wikipedia entry of the year (2006)
- The Wikipedia operations are run on a software package called MediaWiki, written in PHP
- Wikipedia runs on LINUX servers (Derek would smile if he sees this)

- YOU CAN EDIT THE WIKIPEDIA COMPANY INFORMATION IN WIKIPEDIA (Talk about being open).
Aside from everything, Wikipedia is a revolutionary idea. I am an extensive user of the website, usually to gain knowledge about, well, just about anything.
The best thing, as Dr. Gibson mentioned, is that Wikipedia involves its users reducing cost and saving time - What a great concept (Why didnt I think of it?).

]]>I was on the phone just the other day trying to place an order for a household item. Everything was fine until the salesperson requested a credit card number. All of sudden I felt a jolt - do I want to give my credit card number to this person that may never have any accountability.
I hung up the call and sat down to think. We sometimes take for granted the laws protecting us in the United States. Someone who may take our financial information over the phone (as long as we are not gullible enough to give it to any dick and harry) can, most likely, be held accountable by law enforcement agencies or in the court of law if we experience any compromise with our information. Citizens of our country are familiar with these laws. The consumers and retailers are cautious alike. But this last phone call made me think as to the kind of moral fiber and business ethic someone is an overseas country may possess, especially when it comes to developing nations.
I used to work for a Financial corporation not too long ago dealing with thousands of credit card numbers. I couldnt even perceive stealing that information and getting away with it - I am aware how strict the laws are and how forensics experts along with law enforement agencies could easily put me behind bars. But, in a country that is on the road to progress and has yet to solidify consumer protection laws, can this country provide me with the safety blanket I need to place an order - online or over the phone?
eCommerce has, without a fraction of a doubt, made life easier - But with most of the sales and support jobs being sent off-shore, I am compelled to re-evaluate my level of trust.

]]>Especially the zdnet blog entry seems to be very interesting in my eyes. It describes what web 3.0 is going to be about and about the main layers of it.
According to Phil Wainewright (the author of the zdnet article) web 3.0 is going to deliver a new generation of business applications. This new generation consists of (among others) the so called semantic web that is an evolving extension of the World Wide Web in which web can be used in a format that can be read and used by software agents, thus permitting them to find, share and integrate information more easily.
Phil Wainewright also mentions the main three layers of web 3.0 that are API services (like Google search or AdWords APIs), Aggregation services (intermediaries that eliminate some issues help to aggregate raw API services) and finally Application services (composite applications that bring together functionality from multiple services to help users achieve their objectives in a flexible, intuitive and self-evident way).

]]>Rich sheridan, CEO of menlo innovations talks about the cytometers, a product which they are developing along with Accuri. A cytometer is a device which counts cells, is being used in medical research facilities. Accuri has come up with the idea
of providing cytometers at price lower than in the market and reduce the expertise required for its operation and they approached menlo.
The menlo inov is developing the software interface for the cytometer. the company uses the word "hightech anthropology" for its iterative software developent process for this product. During the process of deveoplment they found that cytometers are difficult to use and an error in using them could delay research projects by months. hence only lab directors work on it without entrusting it to any one, which is cause of distraction for many other duties they perform. Accuri is trying to use this situation to its advantage by developing cytometers which need low level expertise.

Everybody will ask the question that I have being using it such a long time I had no problem with it. The problem is these new technologies have long term effect. You won't die right away. It works like slow poison. Today we hear about different kind of cancers, I am not saying that microwave are the only cause for all these but somewhere around they act as passive catalyst.
My serious urge to everybody is try to use little less of microwave oven every day. I know that how we all got addicted to it. Try to limit microwave to reheating and as much as possible don't cook in a microwave oven.
Open Id is vulnerable to phishing attacks. When you arrive at Open Id enabled website it will redirect to Your Open id provider for authentication. So you may be redirected to a phishing website and you may unknowingly give away your account details. So this will allow the hacker to login to other websites you login to. The same cool feature (one username and password) of open id can turn to a night mare.
Your service provider for open id has all details of your web activities. He can use this for data mining and might use this for his advantage. There is a lot of data mining that goes on today without the knowledge of the individuals. Service provider might sell this information to third party too. For example, Google scans each and every email and displays appropriate ads to the side. Google is invading our privacy. Recently we had Comcast digital voice at our home, right from the first day onwards we started to get different kinds of promotional calls. The same thing can happen with the open id too (in future we might have smarter technologies to analyze data, we don't know yet).
I think it's too early to talk about all these. But soon we might have to face these possibilities. I am sure we will find a fix for this too. As every coin has two sides to its, Open Id has two side to it. All we can do is be optimistic about the future of Open Id Protocol.
