More and More I Don't Think Majors Matter

| | Comments (1)

Lately I have seen a few instances where people with a certain major get a job with something that you don't think would involve their major. Also i have seen where a firm is looking for people that have qualifications that you wouldn't associate with that company.

After watching Linda Girard on Michigan Innovators its interesting that a psych, tele-com major would start a web firm. She also was talking about the people that she hired and jokingly said that they hire couple of comp-sci people. You would assume that they would employ a number of comp-sci since they are a web based company.

When Google moved into Ann Arbor there was a mass email that i received that stated that they were looking for employees. It specifically said that you did not have to have a computer background to apply. I thought that Google (the biggest search engine in the world that revolves the internet) would want some people that had a way with computers.

Lastly, I took a physics class last semester and the teacher brought an article talking about the gaming industry. The article said that the major game development companies have been hiring more physicists than programmers because they wanted the games to be life like.

I like this trend because it doesn't mean that i need to be parked behind a computer all day once i get a job. It is also very frustrating when people ask you your major and then they say what are you going to do with that....and i have no solid reply.

I might think it was the opposite. Now, everyone is going to be tied to their computer.
