Link Valuation

When you make a website, getting it to turn up on the major search engines is imperative. Getting your site on the first page of results is even tougher. This site put together a great list on different methods and then ranks them accordingly. After I looked the list over and thought about the rankings, they all make sense. The list is something any web developer should do when they finish a website.

The site also has a great list of what to do if you don't want your website to be returned on the search engines. Ahoy!

Garmin GPS phone

I personally like this better than the iPhone, mainly because I don't like the small hard drive on the iPhone. Having a GPS device handy is such a useful thing if you are always traveling to places and you don't know the directions. The good thing about this device is that the GPS software is actually useable. Most cell phones with GPS have horrible software that is just plain annoying to use. The screen on the phone is sleek and big, you can check it out here.

Apple is fixing the computer industry

In the past eight years Apple has taken the computing industry by storm. They have made an operating system that is easy for anyone to pick up and use. Their market share is continually on the rise and there seems to be no end in site. So how are they fixing the industry? Well, now there is a different idealogy that users seem to like. Windows is less attractive than OSX now because OSX is so easy to use for what most people want to do. Listen to music, edit pictures and video, write, and do general business work. Furthermore, Mac's are sexy. Before apple made the laptop sexy they were all big, bulky, and ugly.

I for one am very happy that Apple is doing this, and I wish them the best of luck. Here is a long writeup on what Apple is doing for the Industry.

CSS Resources

Cascading style sheets are a great way to optimize any website. The true power of CSS isn't realized by most of us. CSS has been equated to plain and simple but it can be very catchy. Take a look at these websites and tell me that I'm wrong.

Image galleries are great when optimized with CSS, and they load quick. If your stuck with a website you don't like to much just browse through these and pick something to add, it works!

A true artist - Andrew Bird

Andrew Bird is an amazing musician. He has a sound that is unique and intriguing to listeners young and old. If I had to "tag" him it would be bluesy-jazzy-singer-songwriter. His lyrics are moving and subtle with random crescendo's that leave listeners begging for more. His violin is soothing and at time aggressive. He plays it with his own unique sound. Oh, and the man can whistle like nobody I've ever seen. During his performances he plays a wide variety of instruments, proving his musical talent.

If you are going to give one album a test drive, I recommend Fingerlings. Try it, trust me.

I listen to a lot of music on my computer. You can check out my last.fm profile for proof. I used to use iTunes to listen to music but it became a heavy app and it now runs slow on my old computer. I now use Winamp - a legacy version. I used to use winamp when I was young but I strayed away from it, not knowing why. Winamp used to be very very light weight and very user friendly. AOL recently bought winamp and there is now a corporate version of it, which I run on my laptop and I actually like it quite a bit. I can use it to manage my iPod and remotely connect to my desktop where my music library is. You can download the 10th anniversary edition here.

Are web forums going away?

No. Web forums have been around for along time and they are here to stay for even longer. They are great because users can speak their mind on the same level as anyone else on the forum. This site has a decent write up on how to pick a forum and gain respect within the community.

The argument against forums is that social networking sites are just better. Plain and simple. I agree, but most social networking sites don't put an emphasis on quality. In forum communities, if you post something that isn't educated you are looked down upon. That is why forums are so great for troubleshooting.

CIS Courses

I'm writing this in an effort to give some accurate feedback to the faculty in the College of Business. I have just completed the CIS program and I would like to take this opportunity to give you my two cents.

I would consider offering a wider range of class choices within the CIS program. Refresh the electives with things like advanced web design, specific programming languages, hardware security, and things of that nature. We have the core set of classes that everyone has to take and that is fine, but more electives would be great.

To nitpick, I would consider making IS 380 the same structure as IS 421. So basically cut IS 380 because we don't need to learn how to use Microsoft access - nobody does. We as students are smart enough to learn the schema and learn oracle at the same time. I know that I was underwhelmed. For a second database class It would be nice to make it catered towards the web with something like mysql.

Thanks -

Vista SP1, XP SP3

Vista service pack one is entering its public testing phase tomorrow. It promises to fix networking issues and extend the battery life on laptops, among other things. If this service pack fails to impress the public, Vista could go belly up. I read that Microsoft just released a tool to block the installation of the service packs for varying amounts of time. I can only believe they are doing this just in case they fail. The tool is catered to businesses who can't afford to lose any productivity (why are they running vista?) so their systems don't crash.

Microsoft has a much different image in the public eye these days. When it all boils down, it is still a great company with great products. With all of its flaws Vista still has some hope. It looks great and some features are nice and more intuitive than in XP. I really hope they can pull this out and make it work.

AIM Alternative, Pidgin - Reviewed

Pidgin is an open source piece of software that is used for many different chat protocols. I got really sick of AIM because of the constant updates and the overall performance. AIM is a pretty slow program that hogs the memory much more than it should. On top of that, they have ads built in - I don't want that. I started using pidgin a few months ago and I really like it.

Pidgin has built in spell checking support of a variety of different languages, which is nice. You can also be logged into different chat protocols at once, like AIM and IRC. I give this piece of software my stamp of approval.

Wouldn't that be such a great tool for an iPod touch. It would be possible to make calls anywhere you are connected to the internet, for free! This blog is breaking the news and making it possible, check it out.

"Remember Marian, the guy who's building a preamped mike for the iPod touch? Today he writes that touch hacker eok has ported Samuel's SvSIP to the iPod. SvSIP uses the SIP protocol to connect to other participants and to allow you to talk over WiFi. I tried porting SIP myself and didn't get very far.

Marian writes that eok has been able to both send and receive calls and promises screen shots as soon as possible."

For those of you who don't know,digg.com is a news based social networking site. The title "digg" refers to what the users do when they submit articles to the website. In short, the users browse the web and when they find something interesting they submit it to digg and if other users like it they "digg it" and the article gets onto the front page.

I've been using digg for about a year now and I think it is slowly getting worse. The quality of the articles has gone down and I think that is because it has become so popular. There are "digg it" buttons on many websites to make it easy to submit articles from that website, which is great, but only if the article is good. I still use digg when I'm bored and feel like looking into some news online, but it isn't a cornerstone of my web browsing time like it used to be.

JobFriends progress

I was surprised and happy to see that JobFriends has integrated their application with Facebook. This is, in my opinion, the best project in our class. It took a higher technical skill than most of us in the class have. Congratulations! I've played around with it for a little on facebook and I've added it to my profile. Everything seems to be working but it is a bit slow to load everything, but that is just a function of all the data that is being collected.

I'm looking forward to seeing your presentation complete with a power point that moves more than my grandmother.
